During my time as a chiropractic student, I learned that a cervical adjustment could cause a vertebral artery dissection, resulting in a stroke. Fortunately I have never treated a patient who had such an adverse event. In the past, I had thought that the risk of stroke due to a chiropractic adjustment would be greatest in those patients with the typical stroke risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being a smoker, old age, etc. However, my thoughts on this have changed.

I have been doing some work with a group of pediatric neurologists. Recently we saw an 8-year-old girl who presented with a complaint of migraine headaches, but is otherwise healthy. Her parents related that she has been treated by chiropractors from birth. Her headaches started a few months ago and occur almost everyday. Currently she is seeing the chiropractor once a week, but even with this she can only be headache-free for up to two days. (Side note: Chiropractors often claim that illness or "dis-ease" can be prevented by routine chiropractic care. Also, children typically respond to treatment faster than others. So why is it that this child, who has received routine chiropractic care since she was born, is now experiencing daily severe headaches, which have not improved with additional chiropractic care?)

While the neurologist and I were discussing the case, she told me that she is okay with families taking their kids to alternative health care providers, with the exception of chiropractors. But if a child does see the chiropractor, she recommends that they not have their neck adjusted. Why? You guessed it: Strokes. Yes, even children can get strokes from chiropractic adjustments. In our hospital system, the neurologist said she sees at least a few kids every year who have strokes caused by chiropractic adjustments. She also believes the risk is probably greater in children than it is in adults.
